The first Leader in Me school started in 1999 when a struggling school in North Carolina, A.B. Combs Elementary, was asked to reinvent itself or be shut down. Their principal, Muriel Summers, asked parents and businesses what they wanted in their schools and the following themes were consistently heard from everyone that was asked

  • Leadership
  • Accountability
  • Adaptability
  • Initiative and Self-direction
  • Cross-cultural Skills
  • Responsibility
  • Problem Solving
  • Communication
  • Creativity
  • Teamwork

In her quest to reinvent her school, Muriel attended a 7 Habits conference and noticed how comprehensive the habits were to what she had learned from the parents and businesses. She took this idea back to her staff, and hence a leadership model was instituted in her building using the 7 Habits as the guiding principles. A.B. Combs was the #1 magnet school in the country in 2006 and has inspired hundreds of schools to replicate the leadership model with similar results.
