All About Mrs. Martin
Fall 2016 will be the beginning of my thirteenth year with Livonia Public Schools (including my student teaching at McKinley). I have taught first through fifth grades at Garfield, Grant, Randolph, and Hoover Elementary Schools and this fall will be my sixth year teaching sixth grade at Cooper Upper Elementary.
I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Central Michigan University and received my teaching certification from Eastern Michigan with a major in Elementary Mathematics. I completed my Masters in Reading during the 2010-2011 school year and my favorite parts of school are reading and writing. This will be my first year NOT teaching mathematics, but I can always help out and will actually leave my resources page active throughout the year. I will be team teaching with Ms. Spence (science) and Ms. Webster (math) and will be tackling sixth grade social studies for the first time with assistance from my helpful 6th grade colleagues, Ms. Kimball, Ms. Daraskavich, and Ms. Erikson who also teach this subject area and have been piloting MC3 for a few years.
About My Family
Mr. Martin and I have known each other since we were in high school. We celebrated our sixteenth year of wedded bliss wedding in May. We really love to travel to see lighthouses in Michigan. I'm the photographer in our family, so it is rare to see any pictures of me on the website, but below is my family in front of the Mackinaw Bridge on the left and the Presque Isle Lighthouse on the right. These pictures are from five summers ago. We spent most of this summer traveling to my sister's house in Illinois (It is my summer resort and is very relaxing) and just hanging out at home, visiting family, libraries, and parks, and having lots of fun together. They participated in a week long art camp with a friend from school, took swim classes at the rec center, and attended VBS in Plymouth one week as well. I spent most of my free time reading...A LOT!
My son Zachary will be ten in November and will be a Fourth Grader. He likes Pokemon and Minecraft. He is a great reader and enjoys spending time at the library looking for new books and playing games on the computer. He loves to draw weird characters and make up stories and comic books. Going on epic bike rides with his father is fun too! My son mastered the freestyle and backstroke in swim class and has an amazing butterfly (he's still working on the breast stroke). We loved watching Michael Phelps videos on youtube together for inspiration.
My daughter is Emma Jane and is seven and will be a Second Grader. She likes to read books and write comics too, and she always has a new journal for her random writings. She sings songs and picks up tunes very quickly and is extremely social. She is very huggy and loves on everyone she knows and takes excellent care of all of us. She loves Pokemon and Minecraft too and is the bubbly member of our family. She is also a member of my Brownie Girl Scout troop and we have great adventures together. Her greatest achievement this summer was finally mastering how to ride her bike without the training wheels.
Mrs. Martin's List of Favorite things
Books: (this list could get pretty long) Charlotte's Web, The Tale of Despereaux, The Hunger Games, The Messenger, The Mazerunner Series, The Raft, Out of My Mind, Lincoln's Grave Robbers, pretty much most young adult fiction (I make it a point to take the 40 book challenge each year with my students and read only young adult books during that time) and anything free to download on my Nook that is a mystery or historical fiction. I am currently in the middle of the O'Malley series by Dee Henderson, on loan from my sister. It's a re-read for me, and I'm enjoying my time revisiting these characters.
Movies: Finding Nemo, UP, Tangled, Wreck-It-Ralph, Brave, Frozen, The Avengers, Ant Man, Inside Out, Annie, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, The Sound of Music, White Christmas (I love old musicals).
Pizza toppings: pepperoni and mushroom, and a side order of breadsticks please.
Coffee Houses: Biggby is my number one favorite, Ms. Webster and I hang there to lesson plan sometimes, followed by Starbucks, and then Tim Hortons. I do make my own coffee at home, but truly it is such a treat to have someone else make it for you. :)
Dessert: chocolate anything, caramel stuff too, hmmm, and I love a great cheesecake.
Colors: I don't have one, I really like most of them but seem to wear a lot of black.
T.V. Shows: I watch America Ninja Warrior and America's Got Talent during the summer. My school year shows are Chicago Fire and Chicago PD. And I love all versions of Masterchef.
Holidays: Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
Restaurants: Cheesecake Factory, Archies, Panera, and Olive Garden.
Hobbies: scrapbooking and reading.
Thing to do when not at school: play with my kids, visit my family, read, read, read.
Favorite places to visit: my sister's house in Illinois and libraries.
