Math

August, 2017

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The district has made changes to our student report cards and curriculum with the intent to always be current with the latest research to improve student growth. As a result, I have piloted the revisions made to the math report card 2 years and although the new math report card is not scheduled this year for full implementation, I will continue to use it this year since full implementation for reading and writing will begin this year. After teaching the older version of the EDM program in 5th grade, I feel that the students are having an easier time going through the lessons. With that being said, it is still a challenging math curriculum. So, I would like to offer videos on my website to help support students. Please also remember that students have the online support from EDM. In September, students will be introduced to the online portion of Everyday Math and will be given their personal username and password to access the site for support. After the holidays, I will go through the log in process for any students who may have forgotten and I plan on visiting the computer lab for a few hands on activities.

For now there are other resources, such as,  Xtramath.org  and Brainpop.  The Xtramath.org provides practice with basic facts and Brainpop is a cartoon resource for all academic areas.

Currently, student are learning how to change an improper fraction into a mixed number by dividing the numerator by the denominator.

Ex.   5/2 =   5 divided by 2    =  2  1/2  Remainders are always written over the divisors.

To do the reverse and change a mixed number to an improper fraction, students should multiply the denominator by the whole number and add the numerator. Place this number over the denominator and they will have an improper fraction.

Ex.  3 1/4  = 4 x 3 + 1 / 4,    which equals 13/4

Sincerely,

Lynn deCarli
